Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is the purpose of the face velocity alarms that are sent with each enclosure?

The face velocity alarm is a critical safety feature included with each containment enclosure to monitor proper airflow within the enclosure. The purpose of the face velocity alarm is to alert you when the air velocity (face velocity) inside the enclosure has fallen below the recommended and safe operating range. When working with hazardous materials or substances inside a containment enclosure, it’s essential to maintain a consistent and controlled airflow. The face velocity alarm measures the speed of the air as it passes through the front opening of the enclosure, which is where the operator interacts with the enclosure’s workspace.
The key functions of the face velocity alarm are:

    1. Safety Monitoring: The alarm continuously monitors the face velocity, and if it falls below the safe operating range, it will provide an alert. A sudden drop in face velocity could indicate a problem with the ventilation system, such as a filter blockage or fan malfunction, potentially exposing the operator to hazardous materials.
    2. Operator Protection: Maintaining the recommended face velocity helps to contain any airborne contaminants or hazardous particles generated during handling within the enclosure. This protects the operator and surrounding environment from potential exposure.
    3. Compliance with Regulations: Many regulatory guidelines, including USP 800 and other industry standards, specify the minimum required face velocity for containment enclosures. The face velocity alarm assists in complying with these safety regulations.
    4. Performance Verification: The alarm helps validate that the containment system is functioning properly and operating as designed. Regular monitoring of face velocity also ensures that the containment unit is providing an effective barrier against hazardous materials.

In summary, the face velocity alarm is a critical safety tool that helps maintain a controlled environment within containment enclosures, providing an added layer of protection for operators and maintaining compliance with safety regulations. It serves as an early warning system for potential issues, ensuring safe and effective containment of hazardous materials during various laboratory and industrial applications.

Why is the face velocity alarm sounding all the time? For your safety and the proper functioning of the alarm, please refrain from unplugging it. If you encounter any issues with the alarm, a common cause might be that it has not been calibrated yet. Our dedicated team is ready to assist you promptly. Common issues may be addressed using the TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE.  Alternatively, feel free to reach out to us at 1-800-849-3429, and we’ll be more than happy to provide the necessary support and guidance to ensure your alarm operates optimally. Your safety is our priority, and we’re here to address any concerns you may have regarding the alarm’s performance.

How do you calibrate an alarm? For detailed instructions, refer to the user manual that shipped with the enclosure or alarm, or in the Certification Guidelines. To request a copy of the user manuals, click here.

What type of filter do I need? Selecting the appropriate filter for your enclosure depends on your specific application. While most applications utilize HEPA filters, there are instances where carbon or ULPA filters may be required. At Flow Sciences, we understand the importance of finding the right filter for your needs. For personalized assistance and expert advice regarding your enclosure, please reach out to us. Our dedicated team is here to provide the technical knowledge and support you require. Contact Flow Sciences today, and let us help you choose the perfect filter to ensure optimal performance and safety for your application.

When do you change a HEPA filter for a top-mount BIBO enclosure with a minihelic gauge? It depends!! We have a whole host of reasons why a filter should be replaced, but since you’re specifically asking about the minihelic gauge, we presume you’re looking for an answer based on this criteria.  Upon the initial setup and certification of your enclosure, with the face velocity set to your specifications, record the value that is being displayed on your gauge. As the filter performs its function, and with frequent certification ensuring that the face velocity matches the initial setup value, the pressure reading will gradually increase. When the pressure reading is double the initial value, it’s time to change the filter. If you have any questions or need further guidance, please don’t hesitate to contact us, and we’ll be happy to assist you.

How do you determine what filter(s) you need for your top-mount fan housing system? To determine what filter(s) your enclosure requires, we will need the serial number from your enclosure.

Why isn’t my fan running? We assume that it’s plugged in and turned on? With those two criteria fulfilled, let’s look at other likely causes.  Please check the fuse that is near the power connection.  Beyond that, if you encounter any issues with the fan not working, we recommend referring to your manual for troubleshooting steps. Alternatively, you can reach out to your dedicated Flow Sciences representative for assistance. We are here to provide the technical knowledge and support you need to address any concerns with your enclosure’s fan functionality.

Why isn’t my fan pulling enough air? There are various reasons that this could be happening.  Please see the TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE for common causes and solutions. If you still experience any challenges or suspect that your enclosure is not performing as expected, our dedicated team is here to help. Contact Flow Sciences for personalized assistance and expert guidance tailored to your specific enclosure. We possess the technical knowledge and expertise to address your concerns effectively. Reach out to us today for further assistance and let us ensure that your Flow Sciences enclosure operates at its best.

Can we replace our armrest on the front of the hood? Technically it’s not an armrest, but we know what you’re talking about. Each enclosure is equipped with a base airfoil, designed to optimize airflow and improve performance. It’s essential to use the airfoil as intended, not as an armrest. In the rare event of a base airfoil breaking, we offer a reliable solution—an anodized aluminum retrofit kit to replace the broken component. To assist you effectively, please provide us with the enclosure model, serial number, and details about the alarm you are currently using (FS1645 or FS1650). This ensures that any support or service we offer aligns perfectly with your specific containment system. If you need any assistance or have further inquiries, feel free to reach out, and our team will be delighted to assist you.

What information does the serial number for an enclosure provide? The serial number of the unit provides valuable information about its date of manufacture and the original order. Knowing the production date allows us to access the specific revision of the engineering drawing that was in effect during that time. This detail is crucial, as there may have been slight design improvements or modifications made over time to enhance the product’s performance. By referencing the correct revision, we ensure that any support or service we provide aligns perfectly with your specific unit. What is the USP 800 and how can I meet their requirements? USP 800 (United States Pharmacopeia Chapter 800) is a set of guidelines and standards developed by the United States Pharmacopeial Convention (USP) to ensure safe handling of hazardous drugs in healthcare settings. It specifically focuses on the handling, compounding, administration, and disposal of hazardous drugs to protect both healthcare workers and patients. To meet the requirements of USP 800, facilities and pharmacies need to implement certain practices and controls. Here are some key steps to meet the USP 800 requirements:

  1. Hazardous Drug Assessment: Identify and categorize hazardous drugs based on the NIOSH list. This helps to determine the level of containment required during handling and compounding.
  2. Containment and Engineering Controls: Use appropriate containment enclosures such as ventilated balance enclosures, biosafety cabinets, and fume hoods to prevent the release of hazardous drug particles into the environment.
  3. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Provide and enforce the use of appropriate PPE for all staff handling hazardous drugs, including gloves, gowns, masks, and eye protection.
  4. Training and Education: Ensure that all personnel involved in handling hazardous drugs receive comprehensive training on proper procedures and safety protocols.
  5. Environmental Monitoring: Regularly monitor and verify the performance of containment devices and ensure they meet the required air changes and airflow velocity.
  6. Cleaning and Decontamination: Establish cleaning and decontamination procedures for equipment, surfaces, and spill management.
  7. Storage and Transportation: Properly store hazardous drugs and follow guidelines for safe transportation within the facility.
  8. Waste Management: Implement appropriate procedures for the segregation, containment, and disposal of hazardous drug waste.
  9. Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs): Develop and follow detailed SOPs for all aspects of hazardous drug handling, from receiving to disposal.
  10. Quality Assurance and Compliance: Regularly assess compliance with USP 800 requirements and conduct internal audits to ensure safe handling practices are consistently followed.

It’s important to note that adherence to USP 800 guidelines is essential for the safety of healthcare workers and patients and to maintain compliance with regulatory bodies such as the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Consulting with a reputable containment equipment provider like Flow Sciences can be instrumental in meeting USP 800 requirements and ensuring the highest level of safety and efficiency in handling hazardous drugs.

Can I convert my current hood to one that would meet USP 800 for hazardous? Quite possibly, yes. The conversion options depend on the specific model number and serial number of the enclosure. If you have a 2000 series EVA with a remote blower, the conversion will be based on the configuration. Once we verify the model and serial number, we can proceed with either providing a conversion kit to transform a single HEPA unit into a dual HEPA unit, or the alternative would be to connect to house exhaust. Additionally, there’s the option to purchase a new fan housing that comes with a dual HEPA filter.
