Sliding-Sash Enclosure for Bohle Mill

Designed for safety, engineered for real-world workflow.

This custom enclosure was developed to support a Bohle blender in a pharmaceutical setting where both milling and sieving operations occur side-by-side. Flow Sciences worked closely with the end-user through multiple design iterations to ensure the unit addressed key facility constraints, operator workflow, and containment performance, delivering a dual-function, pass-through-ready enclosure that integrates seamlessly into high-potency processes.

The left side of the enclosure is dedicated to milling, with sliding sash access, a light curtain safety system, and precise cutouts for drum placement and vacuum integration. The right side supports a sieving operation, with shared containment through a central pass-through, now enlarged to accommodate safe and ergonomic material transfer between sides.

Containment is achieved through dual HEPA filters with Bag-In/Bag-Out (BIBO) changeout and integrated airflow alarms to ensure safe face velocity during operation. All internal hardware and airfoils are fabricated from 316 stainless steel, with a polished discharge cone and sanitary fittings designed for compatibility with GEA split butterfly valve systems. Operators benefit from a blend of visibility and durability with a poly/acrylic structure, full acrylic flip-up doors, and white/yellow LED lighting across the workspace.

This unit also includes thoughtful features that came directly from user feedback—such as removable panels with tool-free inserts to avoid stripped screws, improved docking mechanics for the Bohle cart, and clearances optimized for sample access even with a 40L vessel and NIR analyzer in position.

Electrical integration includes NEMA 4X duplex outlets, a unified control box, and a single-cord power system to simplify utility connections. Additional safety features include a grounding terminal, a flex hose support hook, and three total iris ports for secure handling and monitoring.

Every element of this system was engineered to reduce risk, improve workflow, and meet the strict requirements of modern pharmaceutical manufacturing environments. To explore a similar solution for your lab, contact your Flow Sciences representative.
